Engineering Technician at Sandbox Environmental Systems

3-Month Contract Beginning ASAP

Sandbox Environmental is seeking an engineering technician for a 3-month (12-week) contract beginning in September. This position will be 40 hours per week, in person at our facility in Chicago, IL. This opportunity will pay $28.75 per hour ($1,150 per week) and does not offer any benefits. The employee is expected to work during normal business days, but specific hours will be determined during onboarding.

You will work directly with our engineering team to fabricate and test prototype systems. Tasks may include:

• Fabricate components for prototype systems in the workshop
• Plan and carry out tests to validate prototype performance
• Develop procedures to ensure safe, consistent equipment and prototype operation
• Other engineering tasks necessary to build and operate prototype systems

Success during the 3-month contract period may result in a contract extension or permanent position. 

Qualifications

Required

• Hands-on experience building, assembling, repairing, or testing mechanical equipment, gained through work, technical training, or substantial personal projects.
• Comfortable using common hand and power tools and following safe workshop practices.
• Ability to follow drawings and written instructions, take accurate measurements, and document work clearly.
• Ability to work independently and with a small engineering team, ask questions when needed, and adapt as prototype designs and priorities change.
• Availability to work on-site in Chicago for 40 hours per week throughout the three-month assignment.

Preferred

• Experience fabricating components from plastic, metal, or wood.
• Experience operating CNC equipment, manual mills, or lathes.
• Experience setting up tests, recording results, and troubleshooting mechanical systems.
• A degree, certificate, or apprenticeship in engineering, engineering technology, machining, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience.
